What is Kaffarah?

Kaffarah is a charitable compensation made by Muslims for intentionally breaking any fasts during the holy month of Ramadan, without a valid reason.

How much is Kaffarah for Ramadan 2023?

To atone for the intentionally broken fast, you must fast continuously for 60 days. However, if you are unable to do that, then you have to feed 60 poor people at a rate of £5 per person (the cost of an average meal in the UK - 2023). As a result, this amounts to £300 for each missed/intentionally broken fast.

What is the difference between Kaffarah and Fidya?

If you deliberately break a fast without a valid reason, you must pay Kaffarah. However, fidya (fidyah) is only paid if you miss a fast but have a valid reason to do so and are unable to make up the fast at any other time in the future. The amount paid for each missed fast is the equivalent of feeding 60 people. However, when paying fidya, the payment for each missed fast is equivalent to feeding one person.

What is Fidya?

When someone cannot fast in Ramadan and can’t make up the lost days afterwards (for example, because of a long-term health condition), then they should pay (fidya) for someone else to be fed.

If you don’t fast for any of the days of Ramadan, you’ll be required to pay a charitable form of compensation. You must pay fidya (fidyah) for fasts missed out of necessity, that cannot be made up afterwards.

How much is Fidya?
The rate of Fidya is £5 per roza (the cost of an average meal in the UK - 2023).

Note

Your Fidya will provide someone in need with a nutritious meal they so desperately need.
